Kitchen & Cooking Tips

This post is going to have some simple tips to help you in the kitchen, from keeping your mixing bowls from slipping to making sure your oven is heating to the right temperature…Hope this variety of tips help you in your kitchen…

  1. So how do you keep your mixing bowls from slipping all over the place while you are blending your ingredients?  Place the mixing bowl on a folded damp towel.  They also make silicone pot holders now that have raised areas that, if put under the mixing bowl, will help keep that bowl in place.
  2. Purchasing an inexpensive oven thermometer, you can make sure your cookies come out just right for the holidays.
  3. A large rubber band around a lid of a jar that you can’t get off will help you get a good grip, making the lid easier to twist off.
  4. Did you put too much salt in your beef stew (or whatever you are making), don’t worry about cutting up a potato to drop in there (that doesn’t work as well as people say), instead put a little sugar in the pot.  The sweetness will balance the salty taste.  Just don’t overdo it with the sugar.  Sprinkle a little, wait a couple minutes and then taste…add more if needed.
  5. Cut a lemon in half and run it over your cutting board to get rid of those fishy or garlicky smells.  The lemon works as a deodorizer and will get of most smells.  Even those on your hands…
  6. Shake your egg before using.  If you hear a rattle it means it is stale. Or put in water.  A stale egg sinks and a fresh egg floats
  7. Eggshells always cracking when you are boiling to make hard boiled eggs?  Try this…put some vinegar in the water before boiling.
  8. Do you get teary eyed when you peel onions?  Try this…peel them under water or refrigerate for about an hour before peeling.
  9. Put about 10 grains of uncooked rice in your salt shaker to keep your salt from clumping up.
  10. Keep your pasta and rice from sticking together, pour a little cooking oil into the water before boiling.  The oil will also help keep your pots from boiling over.
