Cooking Eggs
Eggs can be a very simple breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but there are so many different ways to cook them, so below I’ve listed the most popular ways of cooking eggs and some tips to cooking them right…We’ve discussed poached eggs before, so I will start with them and give you a little more information…
Poached Eggs:
In a pot, you will want to heat 1 1/2 to 2 inches of water to boiling. While the water is heating, you will want to crack each egg into their own small bowl or custard cup. Once the water is boiling, you will want to reduce the temperature to low so the water will start to simmer. After you turn the water down to low, you will want to pour the egg into the water. Do this gently, so you don’t break the yolk. Cook about 5 minutes or until the white and yolks of the egg are firm and not runny. Remove with a slotted spoon.
Tip: hold the container you have cracked your egg into close to the water before you pour the egg into the water. This will help the egg keep its shape and keep it from splashing. For a little flavor twist, cook in chicken, vegetable or beef broth.
Soft Cooked Eggs:
Put your eggs in a pot and make sure there is at least one inch of cold water over and above the eggs. Put the pot on the burner and heat until boiling. Remove from heat, cover and let sit for 3 minutes. After the 3 minutes, run cold water over the eggs to cool and to stop the cooking process.
Tip: before you start boiling your egg, take a stickpin and poke it through the large end of the eggs. This will keep them from cracking. Make sure you don’t lose the pin inside the egg.
Hard Cooked Eggs:
You are going to do these the same as you do the soft cooked eggs only you are going to let them set a little longer. So once you remove them from the heat (after they are boiling), then you will cover and let sit for 18 minutes. After that, you will run your cold water over them. To crack the shell, tap the egg on counter. Using the palm of your hand, roll the egg on the counter to loosen the shell. Then peel.
Tip: If you are having trouble peeling your eggs, hold the egg under cold water while peeling. This will make the shell come off easier.
